"Nifty Mnemonics"

So now that we're no longer desperate housewives and we're drop dead gorgeous, let's help one another get brilliant! Share some of your own little tricks for remembering things.

I still use some of these to this day (lol!).

Mnemonic for spelling words like "Receipt" and "Receive" = I before E; except after C

--------------------

Mnemonic for spelling the word "Arithmetic" = A   Rat   In   Tom's   House   May   Eat   Tom's   Ice   Cream

--------------------

Mnemonic for remembering the order of the planets: "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranius, Neptune, and Pluto" = My   Very   Educated   Mother   Just   Served   Us   Nine   Pies

--------------------

Mnemonic for remembering how to spell the word "Convenient" = Every third letter is an "n" (C - o - N - v - e - N - i - e - N - t)

--------------------

Mneumonic for spelling the word Mississippi:

(singing)
Mmmmmmm - Iiiiiiii -
crooked letter - crooked letter - I
crooked letter - crooked letter - I -
humped back - humped back - I

(You'd really need to hear it, but it's a catchy toon and easy to remember. Simply replace the crooked letter for "S" and the humped back for "P")

--------------------

Mnemonic for remembering the Order of Operations: "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction" = Please   Excuse   My   Dear   Aunt   Sally

--------------------

Mnemonic for remerbing the order of colors in the rainbow or visual spectrum: "Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet" = Roy G. Biv

--------------------

Mnemonic for remembering the left hand = You can make an "L" with your left hand. Close up the "L" slightly and it becomes the "Less than" symbol (<).

--------------------

*My favorite!* Mnemonic for remembering which months have 31 days = First you make a fist (tuck your thumb underneath the fingers). Go across the knuckles, and the spaces between each knuckle, saying the months of the year.

For example, the first knuckle will be January, the space between the knuckles will be February, the next knuckle will March, the next space is April, etc.

Once you get to the last knuckle, begin at the first knuckle again.

Each month that lands on a knuckle has 31 days. The months that land on the spaces between the knuckles have 30 days(except for Feburary, of course).

So it would look like this: January (knuckle), February (space), March (knuckle), April (space), May (knuckle), June (space), July (knuckle), August (knuckle), September (space), October (knuckle), November (space), December (knuckle)

That was fun!!

Thanks, Connie!
